ABORIGINAL LAND CLAIMS

HOW TO MAKE A LAND CLAIM

The New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC), with assistance of the Office of the Registrar, has developed a helpful guide to the land claim process: Land Claims Manual for Local Aboriginal Land Councils [PDF].

Land claims must be lodged in writing with the Registrar, using the form Land Claim for Land Pursuant to Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 (NSW) [PDF]. The claim should identify the land claimed as clearly as possible. All land claims should be signed by the Land Council's Chairperson.

INFORMATION REQUIRED TO LODGE A LAND CLAIM

The following information is required to enable the Registrar to lodge a land claim:

the name and address of the Aboriginal Land Council that is claiming the land
whether the land claimed extends beyond the boundaries of the Aboriginal Land Council
the lot number, the portion or reserve number of the land
the deposited plan (DP) number, parish map number or other plan number of the land
the nearest town or village
the shire or municipality, parish and county of the land to be claimed, and
a map that clearly identifies the land claimed can be helpful
