OFFICE OF THE REGISTRAR, Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 (NSW)
MEMBERSHIP AND VOTING
MEMBERSHIP ROLLS
A person is a LALC member only if their name is listed on the membership roll of that LALC.
Membership rolls are kept and maintained by the CEO of each LALC. A consolidated membership roll of all land council members is kept by the Office of the Registrar.
LALC CEOs must:
- ensure (as far as they can) that the membership roll is kept up to date
- send an updated copy of the LALC membership roll to the Registrar by 21st April each year
- advise the Registrar in writing of any changes since the roll was sent last year.
MEMBER INFORMATION REQUIRED
The membership roll is the written record of all the members of a LALC. It contains specific information about each member (such as birth date and address) that is needed to efficiently manage the membership roll both at a local and state level.
A person cannot exercise the rights of a LALC member if all of the information required is not recorded. The CEO must record the following information for each member:
- full name (that is, first name/s and family name e.g. Julie Mary Smith)
- full residential address (not a post office box)
- full date of birth (date/month/year e.g. 6/12/1972)
- the date the member was recorded on the membership roll
- whether the member is a voting or non-voting member
- whether the person's membership is based on residence or on association with the area.
- whether the person is a member of any other LALC (and if so the name of the LALC)
- whether the person is suspended from a LALC and the period of suspension.
It is each member's responsibility, with the assistance of the CEO, to ensure that information in the membership roll is up to date.
Note that personal information on the membership roll is private. Personal information about an individual membr can only be accessed by that member or by the CEO of that LALC.
