ABORIGINAL LAND COUNCILS
NEW SOUTH WALES ABORIGINAL LAND COUNCIL
OVERVIEW
The New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) is the peak body of the Aboriginal land council network in New South Wales, and is a body corporate constituted under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 (NSW).
NSWALC has nine full-time Councillors to represent nine regions in New South Wales. Councillors are directly elected by the voting members of Local Aboriginal Land Councils in each region.
Councillors are supported by the NSWALC CEO and staff.

FUNCTIONS OF NEW SOUTH WALES ABORIGINAL LAND COUNCIL
The functions of NSWALC are set out in the Act in Part 7, Division 2. These relate to:
- Land acquisition (including land claims)
- Oversight of Local Aboriginal Land Councils (LALCs)
- Policy and advice (including advice to the Minister)
- Administration of statutory accounts
- Native title
- Aboriginal culture and heritage
- Financial stewardship
- Other functions prescribed under the Act or Regulation
NSWALC must also prepare and implement a Community Land and Business Plan (see Part 7, Division 5 of the Act).
