NSWALC COUNCILLORS
Elections and Training
NSWALC elections are held approximately every four years. The election of the NSWALC Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson takes place at the first meeting following election of the Council.
Section 131 of the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 (NSW) requires newly elected Councillors to undertake training within six months of their election, to assist them to carry out their role. Failure to attend training may result in a Councillor being disqualified from holding office. NSWALC may extend the period within which training is to be provided, or may exempt a Councillor from the requirement to undergo training if satisfied that the person has the skills and experience to undertake their role.

Anyone seeking a nomination form with a view to standing as a candidate in this by-election should read the following letters from the Registrar of the ALRA regarding certain legal issues which could affect the outcomes of the election.
COUNCILLORS' ROLE AND CONDUCT
The role of NSWALC Councillors (section 130) is to:
- direct and control the affairs of NSWALC
- participate in allocation of NSWALC resources for the benefit of Aboriginal people
- participate in creation and review of NSWALC policies and objectives
- review the performance of NSWALC
- represent the interests of LALC members and respond to their concerns
- facilitate communication between LALC members and NSWALC
