ABORIGINAL LAND COUNCILS

NEW SOUTH WALES ABORIGINAL LAND COUNCIL

NSWALC COUNCILLORS

Elections and Training

NSWALC elections are held approximately every four years. The election of the NSWALC Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson takes place at the first meeting following election of the Council.

Section 131 of the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 (NSW) requires newly elected Councillors to undertake training within six months of their election, to assist them to carry out their role. Failure to attend training may result in a Councillor being disqualified from holding office. NSWALC may extend the period within which training is to be provided, or may exempt a Councillor from the requirement to undergo training if satisfied that the person has the skills and experience to undertake their role.
