JOINT MANAGEMENT AND THE REGISTER OF ABORIGINAL OWNERS

Participation in ownership and joint management of national parks and conservation reserves is a legal right available to Aboriginal people in New South Wales. Part 4A of the National Parks and Wildlife Act sets out a process for negotiating joint management arrangements.

The Registrar's role in this process is to enter the names of Aboriginal people with a cultural association to land in the Register the Aboriginal Owners. The Registrar must give priority to entering the names of Aboriginal people who have a cultural association with land that is subject to joint management arrangements.

In order to identify the Aboriginal owners of land proposed for joint management, the Office of the Registrar may engage a research team to gather information about Aboriginal cultural associations with the area and the families and individuals descended from the original Aboriginal inhabitants. An individual is only placed on the Register if they have given their consent. The Register does not close.

To date, Aboriginal owners have been registered for:

  • Mutawintji National Park,
  • Mount Grenfell Historic Site,
  • Biamanga National Park,
  • Gulaga National Park, and
  • Worimi Conservation Lands.

More information about joint management and the Register of Aboriginal Owners is available in the Guide to the Aboriginal Ownership and Joint Management of Lands in NSW [PDF].
